My mother raised five children, working as a bartender. With only an 8th grade education, she knew she loved people and it was something that would let her be independent and raise her children, on her own. Whenever the man would come to change the 45 rpm records (we referred to them as '45s) on the "bubble" jukebox, the guy would let her have the old ones. You can only imagine how much fun that was for a prepubescent kid, especially one that loved music as much as I did (still do). I also recall times when I was allowed to go to the bar so I always looked forward to customers giving me quarters to punch some favorite songs. A quarter would give a person "5 plays"; what a deal!!! I still have a fair collection of them myself. I loved the 50s!! |
